Meet the Peers of Caerthe:
Ramon the Chronologer, called Kronos
Q. When did you start playing in the SCA, and where?
A. Trimaris – 1989
Q. Who or what got you involved in the SCA?
A. “I was working on the upholstery of a woman’s car at her home and she told me that she had to go to a fighter practice that day. As a student of the martial arts (kendo), I was very interested,” says Kronos. She invited me to go to the fighter practice, it was at Duke Sir Aaron’s in Dun Tir. There were about 10-12 fighters. They asked me if I wanted to fight and I did.” After that first practice Kronos went home and made a whole set of armor, except for helm and arms. He went to the next practice at Duke Sir Aaron’s and upon seeing his armor, the Duke remarked that he was ‘crazy’ and ‘made for this game.’ Kronos came back to Colorado in 1990 and tried looking for the SCA here, having been given the contact information of the knight marshal from his friends in Florida. While he left many messages for the Knight Marshall at the time, it took one of his Florida SCA friends flying out here and taking him to the fighter practice, for him to find it.
Q. When did you get your peerage?
A. Kronos was knighted on the battle field at Estrella War in 2000. Duke Malgwyn was the king, but was a Master of Arms, so Duke Verron, his knight, had to hold the sword and do the knighting. (In the SCA, only a Knight can make another Knight). Kronos says ‘Duke Malgwyn told me later that he was mad he couldn’t actually knight me, and shortly thereafter, he took a knight’s belt.” Kronos also said that by having his own Knight, Duke Verron – Knight him, he is what’s known as ‘pure-blood.’
Q. What are your SCA interests?
A. Kronos is a Silver Tine in fencing, a Bow Master in openhand and crossbow. He sews his own garb, makes boots and enjoys cooking.
Q. What is your SCA persona?
A. Kronos is a Spaniard in the early 15th Century. He is from the small coastal town of Españada. Because of the heavy bartering traffic in his town, he adopts the skill sets, customs and clothing of many who pass through.
Q. What is your best advice for a newcomer?
A. “Be more outgoing,” says Kronos. “We’re a strange group, if you are more curious and make a little effort (to get involved) it is easier for us to help you.”
Q. What is your best advice for a new peer?
A. “Enjoy the laurels. Because the work will start now. Reflect on your accomplishments and take it all in and enjoy it,” he says.
Q. What is your most memorable SCA moment?
A. “At Estrella War about four years ago, I was in a castle battle. We were badly outnumbered. There were four entrances to the castle, and I was guarding one. There were only five of us left in the inside, and more than 40 on the outside. It was the first time I truly felt my life was in danger. Instead of retreating, I attacked the line, throwing men out of the way and killing men. I never felt like that before, it was if I had super human strength. The adrenaline rush was absolutely euphoric and the high was unbelievable.”
Kronos goes on to say, “The greatest thing about the SCA is that we are the most nonchalant group of people and the most giving. People here put so much of themselves into their work, and just give it away to other people because, ‘they thought you’d like it.”
“Here fighters hug and there is true friendship and honor out on the fighting field.”
“I keep playing because of the people. SCA are the greatest people,” he says. “I am a better person for the game.”
